You will 100% need a knife and fork to eat this.. and a napkin. But I promise you it’s worth it.
OPEN FACED STEAK SANDWICHES: everything is made in one pan (yay!) and it’s a cast iron (yay we love cast iron recipes!) Roughly chop and separate layers of two large yellow onions and caramelize them over 3 TBS of butter on medium heat for ~40mins until golden brown and softened. Make sure to constantly stir so they’re not sticking or burning. In the same pan once your cooked onions are out, add a little oil, and crank the heat to medium high. Put in steak seasoned with salt & pepper and cook for 5 minutes each side, resting for at least 4 minutes after removing from pan. Remember this will vary on steak thickness and desired cook. On two pieces of sourdough bread (this is the loaf I cooked yay!) put them in the oven directly onto the rack at 350 degrees. I put a layer of sharp white cheddar cheese to melt in the oven on my toasts. Remove after it’s melty and toasted ~5 minutes. Put it all together and top with whatever! This is great with pesto, mustard, hot sauce, or by itself.
